Encounter 191 – 12.11.2021

The weather was pleasant today, near the bicycle center at the entrance to Kibbutz Be’eri there were some hikers and on our way to the “lighthouse” on the narrow field road, several cyclists pedaled.
We were optimistic … Nahshi did not arrive today, but his place (in the car, not in making the coffee …) was taken by Moshe who together with Shmulik and me, we prepared the circle, still optimistic …
Roni arrived and later also Jaber and this is: to take out A military vehicle whose passengers we were intrigued for a moment, approached and immediately turned to the other side and a tank that was heard (not seen …) maneuvering north of us, no promenades were observed in the area …
The conversation then was mainly about the experiences of Moshe and Mine from a tour we conducted on Thursday in Bedouin communities. Some are ” Unrecognized Villages” and one is close to recognition. The tour was organized by Michal Oren and guided by Odelia Matar from the “Forum for Coexistence in the Negev.” During the tour we met and listened to local leaders who brought to us the less enlightened sides of the relationship between the Bedouin citizens and the state and the attempts to regulate civilian life in the country they are citizens, also the failures …
Among other things, we were in El Zarnuk, Jaber’s village. Jaber was not at home but managed to arrive when we left the village and saw each other.
Today Jaber is here, in our “circle” and he adds his own insights. Jaber also attends a tour guiding course and his dealing as a native Arab with the Jewish narratives inherent in the course is particularly interesting.
On the Gaza issue, Roni is the light in the lighthouse and at every meeting brings the information in her possession.
The olive harvest season in the West Bank is coming to an end. Shmulik and I talked about the experience of meeting the families of the farmers who harvest their olive groves under the restrictions and harassment of the army and the settlers.
Shmulik, Nahshi and Shelly (Nahshi’s sister) took Palestinian children from a village near Jerusalem to bathe in the Mediterranean last Saturday! For some it is the first time in their lives that they are at sea! All the participants in the “operation” experienced great happiness and Shmulik shared …
The Lack of travelers in our area, once again raised the issue of finding ways to expand the circle of participants in our lighthouse meetings.

Encounter 190 – 5.11.2021

We started the “circle” today with Atef and Ahmed who passed, stopped, drank coffee and
hurried on. Therefore, they remained in the summary only in their first names without us
knowing (and summarizing …) their Gaza consciousness.
They were followed by Arnon and Hilik (a woman) who announced that Uzi and Malki were
on their way and since Roni also announced that she was on her way we waited with the
round …
meanwhile Rami told about his insights from a short trip to Greece, which took place this
week. The trip was, admittedly, in matters of tourism, but Ramy was occupied by the
insights of Irad Malkin who diagnoses a kind of common identity he calls “Mediterranean
identity”, a kind of resemblance between the inhabitants of the Mediterranean shores and
through this view, from sea to land, seeks to understand conflicts On the land among its
inhabitants (oops, hope this is what Rami meant …)
Through Malkin’s thesis, Rami realizes that we are constantly preoccupied with identity.
After returning from Greece, he discovered that the stories of his “our father Abraham”
were a bit shaky. Gaza for him, today, is a large and important port in the history of the
Mediterranean, a port he reaches on a Phoenician or Egyptian ship.
Mark is currently taking a writing course. The instructor bases the course on the teachings of
Etty Hillesum, a Dutch Jew who perished in the Holocaust and left diaries. Mark reads to us
what he wrote (in English). As a person living in space he is sensitive to the voices, the voice
of history, the prayers for peace, the voices of war, the rhetoric of politicians and the
mourning of the common man. He experiences the clash of narratives and the relentless
propaganda. In the ground remained the ruins of civilizations from the past. And the
pleasant evening breeze coming from the sea brings the sounds of the present, prayers,
shots and music. From a distance the sounds mix. But the dominant voice is the voice of 2
million people trying to live a normal life inside a ghetto! Sometimes, someone is killed not
far away, near the fence of the ghetto, and sometimes someone dies or is injured while
defending or trying to gain a homeland.
Dina says that Gaza is part of life in the area. It does not depend on our will … It can be
ignored but Gaza is present. Dina finds herself talking a lot about Gaza and the “lighthouse.”
Gaza should always be kept aware, and flooded whenever possible. Gazans deserve to live
as human beings. Who like us knows what it is like to be in their situation …
Roni tells of a group that came to hear the story of someone who lives near Gaza. But Gaza
also lives next door … it focuses mainly on the story of the Palestinians. In meetings she
holds at the settlement with groups, she talks about the history of getting to know Gazans
(including an agricultural mission in Egypt) and talks about her difficulty in convincing people
of her belief in the right of both peoples to live in a non-violent space. To convince other
people, she also needs partners in Gaza. She talks about them and says that there are a lot
of people in Gaza who know that there are Israelis who want a peaceful solution, but in Gaza

they want us to hear and understand them as well. Dreaming of herself in her own funeral
and in her dream, all the friends from Gaza want to come to accompany her …
Arnon remembers from his childhood a blind Druze who used to come to his house in Haifa
and sell fruit. Already as a child he knew how to distinguish between a Druze and an Arab.
First Memory from Gaza, as a soldier navigating the orchards in Khan Yunis. He once
survived a grenade thrown at the vehicle he was driving. Arnon was a partner in the “Basel
Project”: developing the ability to quickly control the departure and return of tens of
thousands of people in crossings in a short time. The second intifada interrupted the
implementation of the project. Today he is concerned about Gaza. He distinguishes between
the Arabs of Israel and the Arabs in the territories. He has no answer to many problems.
They are human beings first and foremost and that is how it should be seen. The relationship
that existed in the past, after the 1967 war was seemingly quiet, but was actually a “horse
and rider” relationship.
Uzi reached the borders in 1965. He remembers the period in the area before the 1967 war
and the period after it as “we would walk around Gaza alone and without weapons” … Gaza
is for him today “deep sadness and a constant feeling of missing out”. We are the winners
and the strongest and we must find answers.
For Nahshi Gaza it is neighbors and friends, especially in recent years after years of
forgetfulness and repression. The area could be much better. The situation today is
unbearable. Nahshi is looking for a way not to stay passive. Here, in our Lighthouse, it fills
some of that. Awareness of the situation should be disseminated.
Shmulik Is in contact with Palestinians mainly on a personal level. On the collective side, he
says, we need to find a solution to the area. It is a landscape of his homeland and he belongs
here. It does not preclude the belonging of a person who has lived here to return. This is
land of two nations that can find a solution. He remember that once came to the circle a
father and children from Alfei Menashe, listened, played, drank coffee and drove. After a
few months they came back to see if we were still here … Shmulik would continue to come
looking for a solution through the circle …
Hilik Lived for a short time in her youth not far from here. In her area of ​​residence today,
they have good relations with the surrounding Arabs. Joint trips and conversations about the
existence of coexistence. Gaza for her is a lot of pain. A desire for the people there to live a
normal life. Also hopes for change in relation to the Arabs within the Israel.
For Malki, Gaza was not a familiar space until she came to live in the area. Most of her life
was spent far away from here. She served in the area for a while in the army … When she
moved here, her view of Gaza sharpened. Her freedom in the face of their non-freedom is
very jarring. We talk about their suffering and then return to our comfortable life. There it’s
a prison … for Malki to come here is a kind of help to hertself as well. In talking about the
situation, it is difficult for her to argue with the arguments based on religion. The arguments
presented in the “statement” from God and therefore they can not be challenged or
contemplated, frustrate her. Everyone wants to live and can be good to everyone. The
religious section blocks without giving rational reasons.

Rami raises for an open discussion the question that ended the previous session, how do we
Roni claims that the Gazans know we are here, it is important to them and therefore

Towards the end of the meeting, a topic came out of the subconscious of the “lighthouse” conversations: How do we proceed?
The absence of travelers hosted in the “circle”, whether it is due to the plague or the hot summer or any other reason, and also the paucity of conversations with friends across the fence have created a kind of reflection and perhaps even an appeal to the format of the “lighthouse”.
It seems to me that it will be inevitable to discuss the upcoming meetings on the matter and everyone is invited to express opinions …
After deducting all non-Gaza-related talk (which was the majority of the talk in the circle …) here is the summary:
Ose’s movie “Aswat-Acherim” (Other Voices). A film shot and edited by Ose Oyamendan, an American documentary, starring characters familiar to us all (especially Roni!). Roni is in constant contact with Ose and asks for ideas for help with distribution. Intended to try to get to the Cinematheque (Sderot or Tel Aviv), there is an abbreviated version on YouTube (45 minutes out of an hour and a half).
A discussion developed about the qualities of the film precisely in recognition of its importance and in bringing its message to the Israeli audience.
Hayuta reads a poem by Roman Eisenberg, a man she knew in a bookstore and interested in hes book of poems..
Roni gives new details about the hospital.
Rami says that the region suffers from a lack of trust between various factors that operate in it.
Mahran talks about a world-wide American strategy whereby they identify a future confrontation with China and therefore do not want to disperse into all sorts of relatively small “local” conflicts. Not to be disturbed. One of the proofs he says is the relocation of laborious factories from the East back to the US. China is the new external enemy needed by the US administration (any administration …), and after the Soviets and Islam (Iraq, Afghanistan etc …) the “choice” passes To China.

“We talked,” referring to Shmulik, Nahshi and I, who are in charge of the infrastructure and we were gradually joined by Talila and Hanan.
When Roni arrived, our building was raised to the top of the lighthouse and illuminated Gaza. Roni, who is linked to men and Women in Gaza, told about videos that are sent to her in which girls and boys are excited to receive a new school bags!
Roni went on to talk about a slight shift in the operation of a new hospital that was built and has not yet started operating, About her concern every time he liaises with a friend in Gaza and the relief of his renewal, and a little about the mood of her friends within the routine of life in Gaza.

Encounter 186 – 8.10.2021

Today Roni is back to us! In her real body! And not only in her spirit that is always lined up on the “lighthouse”, but she herself in full exclusion. Undoubtedly a real refresh and also a little “shaking” of the lighthouse idea … we will reach the “shaking” at the end of our summary.
Erez arrived on a “Harley” motorcycle … came for a preliminary tour before Saturday, where he will be accompanied by other motorcyclists for a trip in the area. Shmulik in the role of Nahshi serves him (and us) coffee. Rami greets him with an explanation of us and adds hope that “someday we will not have to sit here anymore …”
For Ramy, Gaza in recent years has been an internal alarm clock. Something that reminds him that he’s not alone on the planet. That he should and can look at the weak and the suffering. Shmulik says that we have been hosting people in the circle for 3.5 years. People like us and different from us. Shmulik is happy to meet travelers who comes mainly in the spring and winter. In the summer they go to the sea …
Now it’s the turn of Erez … he has a long “affair” with Gaza, he says. He is a native and a resident of the area and this “creature”, Gaza, is no stranger to him. As a child he visited there and they visited them. It was obvious to him. Did not see any difference. He played as a child in security trenches of he’s kibbutz and did not think about the context or that he would need shelter again at all … Today he thinks differently, he became disillusioned. Gaza is a “friend” who has become an “enemy.” Still, the basis of his observation is that a dialogue needs to be built. In the created reality, his opinions shifted. We are in war. In war you have to shoot and talk. If it is possible in speech to prevent war it is good. No need to move from where they sit (they and we). Encounter 185 – 1.10.2021

Thus, with the arrival of autumn and with it the relief from the summer heat, a thin stream of hikers begins to return and tour the reserve and also to discover the “lighthouse”. Last week, three cyclists and today a couple from Jerusalem (Ravid and Tal) and three ATV riders (Amit, Ofir and Eili). They were added and came to Shmulik, Nahshi, Hayuta Rami and I, who as usual on Fridays between one and four, circle ourselves into Gaza consciousness in the shade of the pine trees. Sometimes, Mark comes too, like today for example. Maharan, who was on his way to the “lighthouse”, got stuck with a malfunction in his vehicle.
Nahshi told the listeners about connections with people from Gaza from his childhood, for his youth, coming of age. Friendships were formed and when the space closed, most of them broke off. Years passed and he realized that the situation was not normal. People live close by, suffer, and do nothing about it. He felt that he too had a responsibility for what was happening there. The frame here, in “Lighthouse”, was very suitable for him as a way to keep in touch. They know about us, we talk to them and that means thinking about each other. This is also a statement, do not sink into oblivion. Believes that something will change in the future. Everyone needs to contribute their bit. Until then he will hold the light in the “lighthouse”.
Hayuta: Her inner motive to come, is the need to be human! Less comes from an ideology, which she attributes mainly to Shmulik Nahshi and me, and on the other hand, enjoys the sense of humor created by the three of us encounter with the ideology …

Shmulik claims that as a communist he is committed to political existence and solidarity and therefore came here. It’s also a kind of “moral laundry” for him … he adds. Tal says that for him, Gaza is a “black hole”. The largest prison in the world. Something that is convenient to ignore its existence. It’s annoying somewhere. Maybe that’s what pushed him to come here to hear about Gaza.
Ravid thought of Gaza while traveling here. The burnt hills … Gaza is a type of wound that the more you move away from it the more painful … wrapped in a wall of ignorance. The 2014 war was an unbearable rift. Visited a tent of bereaved families. Everything in our society is related to the occupation directly or indirectly. Was active in social protest. In her opinion, there is now maturity to talk about the occupation. There are initiatives and are starting to talk about it. Out of desperation she began to act. Always believes it is possible. There is room for her, and also in society, to start doing!
Mark wanted to rest today and decided to rest in our company … While Ravid was speaking, he realized how important it was to mention Gaza and the Gazans. He does not have enough energy to deal with the occupation. it’s tiring. It is still difficult to decipher Israeli society. It seems strange to him to even try to understand it …
Eili: A native of the area, he has known the reality since he was born. Feels like we ‘got used to it’, it’s pretty natural for him already. The situation is unsolvable in his opinion.
Ophir is also a native of the area. Asks himself where else in the world does such a reality exist. Is it even possible to resolve the conflict? Imagining himself as daring and asking how he would have behaved. Life here shaped him in their image. Want to be optimistic but …
Amit lives in the area from the age of 10. When asked about Gaza, she says thease are her life. Her mother says life here, near the Gaza Strip, is 99 percent heaven and one percent hell. Her brothers literally grew into reality. She has a sister who is scared of a motorcycle passing by on the street and a nephew who plays in kindergarten in “running for shelter” … I wish we could hope, but we are already used to it and we are not excited about a balloon or an alarm … Hayuta asks her if she would like to raise children here. She repeats her mother’s answer, adding that she still asks and examines her surroundings and she don’t have an answer yet.
Ramy says the circle was formed when people joined it. Explains the idea behind the “lighthouse”. Every morning, as he begins the day, he tries to bring the intention into consciousness. Well, he says, there is a place you can come to and talk about Gaza. There is a house to talk about Gaza. This is our reality and that of Gaza and the “lighthouse” serves as its home. Gaza represents for him something that requires getting up in the morning and adjusting to it. The dialogue about Gaza is not off the agenda but it’s going nowere… Rami is building within it the recognition that this will change. It’s a matter of time, because there can be no other. Asks himself, does he “love” Gaza despite what comes from there? And replies to himself that the mind does not practice, yet he loves optimism and faith. We do not know much about Gaza. The “noise” that emanates from it merges with the noise that is heard towards it and ambiguity is created. Gaza is an important crossroads in history, it meets the peoples of the world. Gaza’s peace periods are much larger than those of the war. Gaza during his grandfather’s period is the second largest in the area. His grandfather traded between Cairo and Damascus and Beirut and moved to Gaza. Ramy’s father came here 75 years ago. On the way to Be’eri, he would pass through Gaza and load goods into the kibbutz. The road north passed through Gaza. Rami himself sleeps in hotels in Gaza as part of his tourism business. Grandfather, father, himself and even his son met and will meet Gazan people. The road from there can go in any direction. At the moment Gaza is an unresolved story and is paying the price of the “no solution”. The Nakba is the Palestinians’ narrative of the conflict. For Rami the Nakba, it is another point of view on the conflict. Abundant waters create life, and the peoples of the region are thirsty. Encounter 184 – 24.9.2021

When I got out of the car, a few minutes before 1:00 PM, a drizzle of rain began in “our” pine grove.
I told myself it was a sign from heaven or from Mary and moved to the lower level to settle inside the building.
Inside were some cyclists hiding from the rain and refusing to drink coffee.
Ramy arrived, and there were three of the riders left interested in a story and coffee, until the bike rental time ran out.
They are from Sderot and its surroundings and after hearing a little about us and the greatness of Gaza, they managed to tell briefly about “their” Gaza: everyone in hes unique style sees it as a dangerous and threatening place, most of them agree that there are good and bad ones there as well.
These were pedaled on their way and Hanan is already coming, followed by Bella and Malki.
We talked about the “Iron Dome” – does the protection it gives us promote peace (fewer casualties and fewer reasons to react aggressively) or vice versa? (Helps to perpetuate the concept of “conflict management”).
Then the conversation spread to other districts and it was interesting and important, but I had to leave early, so…

Encounter 183 -17.9.2021

Last week, following the escape of the prisoners from Gilboa Prison, I wrote an imaginary summary in which, as an imaginary story, one of the fugitives reached our circle … (the real summary to remind you, published last week by Nahshi). I sent the imaginary summary to a number of readers including Ramy.
Today, after we gathered all (Nahshi, Hayuta, Shmulik, Oded, Rami, Malki) in the shade of the pines, wind on our faces and coffee in our hands and no more participants (except Limor who arrived at the end accompanied by the dogs – Nina and Yefet), at this moment, Rami chose to read To our ears the “imaginary summary.”
In the circle, a discussion arose around the theoretical issue of “to extradite or to not extradite”: between the two ends – Different possibilities unfolded.
After exhausting the possibilities, the discussion shifted to the question of compliance with the law – are there cases in which it is justified not to comply with the law? Comparisons were made to Poles who hid Jews in the WW2, in violation of the law. Situations of non-compliance with traffic laws were discussed in extreme cases and should there be a degree of “logic” and “fairness” in the authorities’s response, enforcing and judicial. The issue of identification with the “enemy” has arisen (I put the word “enemy” between quotes because in my opinion, sometimes there are others who choose the enemy for us …). Does the law ignore the broader context that served as a ground for committing the offense and focus on formulating it only in the interest?
From there we moved on to “materials” that affect the process of drawing conclusions for each and every one of us. Quotes were quoted from an interview published in the Haaretz newspaper over the weekend with Yaakov Sharet, an opinion column by Ehud Gera that responds to Michal Weitz’s claims as they appear in her film “Blue Box” was mentioned, the organization “Zochrot” was mentioned as an organization that brings a one-sided narrative of justice. Someone also argued that a “state” is an organization that brings a one-sided narrative of justice, and there was resentment at the comparison.

Gadir read posts that influenced her this week and we heard about a meeting from yesterday in which an Israeli woman (Ruby Damlin) and a Palestinian (Bassam Aramin) from the Bereaved Families Forum spoke about the ability to forgive and the exciting personal path each went through.
